Life time CO2 emissions in domestic refrigeration for the business-as-usual and several emission reduction options in developed and developing countries. An average value has been applied for both developed and developing countries as there are significant differences within those country groups. Leak reduction can be achieved through improved design and maintenance. Improved design can also reduce the charge size. The hydrocarbon refrigerant HC-600a is the best natural refrigerant alternative.

BAU leakage rates are higher in developing countries because of bad road conditions. Emissions during servicing and at the end-of-life are also higher because of a lack of regulations. Even though the same new refrigeration units are sold in developed and developing countries, energy efficiency in developing countries was considered lower under BAU conditions: Units are often older, less well maintained and the standard of insulation is lower.

The calculation assumes that the same energy efficiency standards can be reached in developing countries over time. The possible improvement in energy efficiency and thereby indirect emissions is relatively low. It is due to the penetration of new technologies such as hybrid units and inverters. In developing countries, better insulation is also considered. The efficiency of refrigeration systems using hydrocarbon or CO2 as refrigerant is dependent on climate conditions. Their use was not considered in the calculation of indirect emissions.
