The energy consumption of transport refrigeration units is usually given in litres of fuel used per hour of operation. Fuel consumption and cooling capacity under test conditions are determined regularly for all refrigeration units that are sold on the international market. The unit consumption per kW of cooling capacity ranges from less than 0.15 L/h to over 0.5 L/h. However, the actual consumption depends heavily on the quality of insulation and design and the number of door openings during operation.
It is difficult to determine the actual fuel consumption for units that are connected to the vehicle’s engine.
