green cooling initiative: Market overview

Market overview

Transport refrigeration is, similarly to mobile air conditioning, a global market with relatively few global manufacturers dominating the market of refrigeration units. This has led to relatively uniform technology solutions, including the use of refrigerants, both in developing and developed countries. The market is dominated by the following two global companies.

  • Carrier Transicold - USA - Global leader for all prodcuts
  • Thermo King of Ingersoll Rand - USA - Global leader for all products

Other companies have achieved significant market shares only on a local or regional level or for niche products. Examples:

  • Kingtec - China - Market leader in Asia, expanding market in the Middle East
  • Zanotti - Italy - Global scope with wide range of units
  • Mitsubishi - Japan - Global scope with wide range of truck, trailer and marine units; offers split units for trucks and trailers
  • Konvekta - Germany - Smaller units for trucks and vans; product development of small van units using R-744
  • Frigoblock (now Ingersoll Rand) - Germany - Uses R-410a and advertises especially energy efficient units
  • Transfrig - South Africa - High market share in African market, offers wide range for trucks and vans and some units for trailers
  • Subros - India - Launched transport refrigeration systems in 2012 and offers a wide range of products for smaller volumes
  • Schmitz-Cargobull - Germany - Experts in body manufacturing, now offering their own refrigeration units
  • Gah - UK - Units for vans and smaller trucks
