Advancing Green Cooling Initiatives The collaboration between the German and Kenyan governments has made significant strides in implementing the Montreal Protocol and the Kigali Amendment. The event highlighted the use of natural refrigerants such as R290 or CO2, which are more climate and environmentally friendly than synthetic alternatives and come with higher energy efficiency. During the event the donation of one transcritical CO2 ejector supermarket refrigeration training RACK as well as the donation of 24 green split air conditioning units and tools to four technical training institutions and 15 units to the Coast General Hospital were officially handed over by the various representatives including Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Education, the Ministry of Environment (MECCF), the German Embassy among others. Investing in Future Workforce The donation is part of a long-term investment in the local workforce and the growing refrigeration and air conditioning sector. Trainers from both Kenya and Germany provided training sessions, ensuring the equipment's optimal use and maintenance. Demonstration Project in Healthcare The donation to the Coast General Hospital serves as a demonstration project, showcasing the benefits of efficient cooling appliances in healthcare settings. These systems are expected to improve operations, reduce energy usage, and lower greenhouse gas emissions. Commitment to Sustainability The event underscored the commitment to sustainable and energy-efficient technologies. The CO2 training RACK represents the latest advancements in supermarket refrigeration, emphasizing the importance of environmentally responsible solutions. Future Plans Looking ahead, GIZ plans to donate an additional 80 green air conditioning units to various technical training institutes and another hospital. The trainings were carried out in cooperation with Bundesfachschule Kälte-Klima-Technik (BFS) Vocational Training Centre. The aim was to provide comprehensive knowledge and capacity for the operation and maintenance of cooling technology using natural refrigerants such as Propane (R290), Carbon Dioxide (R744) and Ammonia (R717). The training was composed of 30% theory and 70% practical work while addressing the application of natural refrigerants. It also involved excursions to innovative enterprises in Germany such as refrigerant companies, RAC components manufacturers, and the refrigeration plants that use natural substances. A special trip was organized to the Chillventa exhibition. More than 45 participants from countries all around the world were awarded with their certificates after a successful finish of the training …

WITT is celebrating its 125th anniversary this year - first of all, congratulations! Mrs. Witt, you are the Managing Director in fourth generation. Was it clear to you from the start that you also wanted to join the family business? I am lucky that my father did not pressure me at all. The company was always present, but I was free to make my own decisions. However, after graduating from school, I decided to study mechanical engineering. I guess as a daughter you always try, maybe subconsciously, to impress your father. And a technical degree was the best choice to do so. During my studies, I was particularly interested in ecological topics and therefore wrote my diploma thesis on the denitrification of drinking water in a bioreactor using bacteria to remove harmful nitrates. After graduating from university, I consequently wanted to work for a company involved in water and soil treatment. However, I actually ended up in the field of cryogenic cooling by coincidence and built air separation plants. During my first job, I had the opportunity to work in the US for three years. When I told my father that I would like to extend my stay for two more years, my father confronted me with a choice: I would either get into the family business on the occasion of the 100th anniversary in the following year, or he would sell the company – something that had never crossed my mind. I have always cared for the environment and always wanted to work in this area. We all see what environmental damage means and the issues of pollution and global warming are now more and more in the public consciousness and intensively discussed. Consumers and local retailers alike are often not aware of which refrigerator is environmentally friendly. With a new label, it is now easy to identify which refrigerators are charged with natural refrigerant, such as hydrocarbons. Exhibiting negligible global warming potentials, these refrigerants are not only more environmental friendly, but have additional advantages such as higher energy efficiency, lower refrigerant charge, longer lifetime and quieter operation. The initiative that started in May 2018 and was first piloted with the two companies Courts Grenada Limited (UNICOMER) and L. A. Purcell, has now also expanded to air conditioning technologies. The Kigali Amendment is expected to avoid hydrofluorocarbon (HFC) emissions equivalent to 72 billion tons of carbon dioxide by 2050. This first ever legally binding agreement to phase-down powerful greenhouse gases (GHG) is a crucial step in efforts to limit global warming and achieve several Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Reducing greenhouse gas emissions in the RAC sector poses a particular challenge to the implementation of effective financial strategies due to its cross-sectoral nature and thus complex structure of involved actors. The side event highlighed the importance of financial flows of various actors to be coordinated and integrated in order to exploit the full reduction potential in the sector. The second side event was jointly organized by the EU Commission and the GIZ as part of the SPODS project. Under the heading "Latin America and the Caribbean go NatRef! A fitness check of different actors required to implement the Kigali Amendment", experts and practitioners discussed the chances, challenges and obstacles with which countries are confronted in the transformation to green cooling technologies.
