Promoting the use of hydrocarbons through training and education. The SIT leads an on-going project that offers rebates for households replacing their old CFC-12 and R134a refrigerators, with new, more energy efficient hydrocarbon refrigerators. The regular training of technicians from industry and private owned businesses is also part of the SIT's responsibility. The emphasis during the trainings is on good practices in refrigeration and air conditioning, including the safe use and application of natural refrigerants, as well as proper refrigerant recovery and retrofitting. …

Since May 2018, the National Ozone Unit (NOU) of Grenada, in cooperation with GIZ Proklima, has been providing Green Cooling stickers to local appliance stores in order to promote the dissemination and use of natural refrigerants on the island state. The initiative created by both project partners supplies local appliance stores with eye-catching green magnetic stickers which are fixed on refrigeration systems with natural refrigerants. As a result, both the distributors and the customer alike are provided with a convenient tool for the promotion and distribution of natural refrigerants, and thus for ozone and climate protection. First piloted with the two companies Courts Grenada Limited (UNICOMER) and L. A. Purcel, the NOU aims to involve more retailers and suppliers and expand the initiative also to air conditioning technologies, with the goal of eventually making Grenada the first f-gas-free Caribbean island. …

August 2015: In supporting the implementation of the Hydrofluorocarbon Phase-Out Management Plan (HPMP) in Nigeria, the National Ozone Office (NOO) together with the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) organized a training for ice machine makers on the installation and maintenance of low pressure foaming machines. The training was held in Abuja on August 11th and 12th, and in Ibadan on August 27th and 28th. The NOO of the Federal Ministry of Environment inaugurated the trainings for ice machine makers under HPMP Stage I. The training in 2015 was so successful that another one was held in June 2017. HPMP Stage I has been successfully completed and Stag II is well under way. Under the Kigali Amendment to the Montreal Protocol, Nigeria, as every other developing country, has committed to completely phasing out hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs) by 2040. The year 2009/2010 is used a baseline, with a 10% phase out by 2015, a 35% phase out by 2020 and a 67.5% phase out by 2025. …

The project “Promoting of Appliance Energy Efficiency and Transformation of the Refrigerating Appliances Market in Ghana” aims at improving the energy efficiency of cooling appliances marketed and used in Ghana. It is funded by the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) Green Energy Fund (GEF) and carried out by the Ghanaian Environmental Protection Agency. The project introduces a combination of regulatory tools such as Minimum Energy Performance Standards and Information Labels (S&L), as well as economic tools. Moreover, a Rebate Program encouraging households to replace old but functioning refrigerators with new and efficient ones has been introduced. The Ghanaian Energy Commission offers rebates of up to GH₵ 300 upon the purchase of new, Energy Efficient Labeled refrigerators. The Rebate Program was inaugurated on a pilot basis in 2012 for Accra and Tema, and was scaled up to cover all other regions by the end of 2013. The government of Ghana is providing GH₵ 1million per year for the Rebate Program, and the program will terminate once the funds are exhausted. …

The Bavarian State Ministry of the Environment and Consumer Protection (StMuV) and the Bavarian Environment Agency (LfU) have launched a multilateral cooperative effort with the Israel Ministry of Environmental Protection (MoEP) aimed at reducing fluorinated gases with high global warming potential in Israel’s refrigeration and air conditioning sectors. The main goal of the project (2014-2017) is to promote natural refrigerants such as hydrocarbons and ammonia in the cooling sector, in support of the international commitment made by Israel to the Montreal Protocol. The Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) is the implementing partner of the project, facilitating the transfer of best practice examples between Bavaria and Israel. Selected Israeli experts participated in a two-week Cool Training Course in Maintal, Germany in March 2017, where they learned how a shift to climate-friendly cooling appliances is viable both from an economic and technical perspective. Moreover, two technical workshops will be organized with the MoEP in Israel for local RAC experts. By training local technicians and political stakeholders, the project supports Israel in promoting green technologies. …

In order to achieve a 65% reduction of HCFCs by 2025, the Bangladesh Department of Environment (DoE) is planning Stage 2 of its HCFC Phase-Out Management Plan (HPMP), funded by the Multilateral Fund. Bangladesh’s HPMP Stage 1 includes an investment component and a technician and customs training component. An 18% reduction in HCFCs after the successful completion of Stage 1 by the end of 2017 is expected, after which HPMP Stage 2 will commence. To achieve the 35% phase-out target in 2020 and in preparation for the 65% target by 2025, set forward in the Kigali Amendment to the Montreal Protocol, the DoE is currently preparing HPMP Stage 2. As a signatory to the Vienna Convention and the Montreal Protocol, Bangladesh inaugurated its Country Programme to phase-out the consumption of Ozone Depleting Substances (ODS) in 1994, with the formation of the National Ozone Unit in 1996. The Country Programme proposed the introduction of regulatory measures, spreading awareness and information as well as training and funding for technological conversions to comply with the country’s climate goals. …

Research and Training Platform using natural refrigerants with particular emphasis being laid on the use of CO2 as refrigerant. A research and training platform using CO2 as refrigerant has been installed at the Université des Mascareignes in Mauritius. This project has been financed through the HPMP (HCFC Phase Out Management Plan) for Mauritius through the Ministry of Environment. The system has been designed to operate in three different modes: Ammonia in direction expansion, a Cascade CO2 operation with Ammonia Cooling the CO2 and CO2 in transcritical mode. The system is completely instrumented with temperature and pressure sensors as well as flow meters to enable trainees to do different kinds of manipulations. …

University, Research and Training Platform Founded in 2012 after a merger between the IST (Institut Supérieur de Technologie) of Camp Levieux and Swami Dayanand Institute of Management (SDIM) of Pamplemousses, the ‘Université Des Mascareignes’ (UDM) has some 1,100 students that are currently enrolled in courses at degree level. UDM was founded in 2012 and is the fourth public university in Mauritius. This new tertiary institution provides an opportunity for students from both institutions to continue their degree, unlike the old system that allows them to only obtain a diploma. Recall that IST has delivered its first classes in the preparatory cycle in September 1998. The SDIM was inaugurated in July 1995 with the goal to provide education and training to students in the areas of Information & Communication Technology, Finance and Marketing. These students are destined to work in the service sector. "The merger of the two institutions will be beneficial to the development of higher education in Mauritius”. Thus, the degrees are both from UDM and the University of Limoges in France, according to the European LMD system, which allows students to earn degrees in Mauritius recognized internationally.
