What is the course about?

“Cooling Carbon Markets” is a comprehensive training course designed for practitioners and professionals working in the cooling sector, focusing on how to leverage carbon markets to mitigate refrigerant gas emissions. While it primarily addresses COPA member countries, it is also open to all stakeholders aiming to enhance their expertise in implementing financial mechanisms for greenhouse gas (GHG) mitigation under Article 6 of the Paris Agreement. The course was developed by the Climate and Ozone Protection Alliance (COPA) — part of GIZ’s Proklima programme, which promotes green cooling worldwide — and its member Energy Changes, experts in carbon markets and environmental solutions in cooperation with the Cooling Program for Southern Africa (CooPSA) project. The course is on Atingi, the online learning platform from the GIZ.

Who is the course for?

The course primarily addresses officials from national ozone units, policymakers, and stakeholders involved in refrigerant management. It is specifically designed for individuals with moderate to high knowledge of refrigerant gases but limited familiarity with carbon market mechanisms. The course is designed not only for policy makers/COPA members, but also for professionals and technicians who are interested in the topic.

How does the course support climate-friendly refrigerant management?

The course aligns with ongoing efforts to leverage market mechanisms under the Paris Agreement and the Kigali Amendment to the Montreal Protocol. It also emphasizes the interplay between these agreements and the development of high-integrity refrigerant carbon projects. By enhancing the understanding of carbon markets and refrigerant mitigation strategies, “Cooling Carbon Markets” aims to empower policymakers and project developers to reduce emissions and promote sustainable refrigerant management practices.
