National energy efficiency strategy for domestic and industrial air conditioning and refrigeration in Cameroon

The rising electricity demand leads to power shortages and costly investments in new power stations, increasing CO₂ emissions. Energy efficiency offers a cost-effective alternative—reducing emissions, cutting consumer electricity bills, and easing pressure on the power grid. A smarter way to meet energy needs sustainably! The ROCA project is working on this in its partner countires. This publication presents some results and recommendations for Cameroon.

Minimum Energy Performance Standards (MEPS) and energy labels are essential tools for improving energy efficiency. MEPS eliminate the least efficient products from the market, while energy labels help consumers make informed choices, boosting demand for energy-saving appliances. This also reduces government spending on energy subsidies, enabling reinvestment in incentive programs.

Implementing MEPS and energy labels has proven effective worldwide. In countries like the U.S., continuous updates to efficiency standards have significantly reduced the energy consumption of appliances like refrigerators—without increasing prices. As more nations adopt these policies, they contribute to long-term sustainability by making efficient products more accessible and affordable.

Beyond environmental benefits, energy efficiency fosters economic growth. It reduces household and business energy costs, encourages innovation in appliance technology, and creates new market opportunities for manufacturers. By prioritizing energy-efficient products, countries can achieve both climate goals and economic resilience.
