The release of the second greenhouse gas (GHG) inventory for the Philippines’ Refrigeration and Air Conditioning (RAC) sector quantifies direct emissions from refrigerants and indirect emissions from electricity use across key subsectors, providing robust evidence to inform climate action in the cooling sector.

To assess the potential benefits of climate-friendly cooling, a pilot project was implemented at the True Blue Bay Resort in Grenada, comparing conventional R410A air-conditioning units with highly efficient R290 (propane-based) units. The pilot demonstrates the technical, economic, and climate benefits of transitioning to energy-efficient air-conditioning systems using ultra-low-GWP refrigerants.

This inventory provides an update to the first refrigeration and air conditioning (RAC) inventory for Grenada conducted in 2020. With the information generated, Grenada continues to maintain a solid estimate of RAC sector emissions, providing a reliable basis for planning and implementing mitigation measures in the RAC sector as part of its Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs).

Natural refrigerants have powered cooling and heating systems for decades — from food and beverage production, cold storage, and pharmaceuticals to industrial processing, commercial HVAC, and beyond. Their performance in Europe and elsewhere proves they can deliver high energy efficiency with zero ozone-depleting potential and no global warming potential (GWP). As global energy systems decarbonize, natural refrigerants such as ammonia, CO₂, and hydrocarbons are emerging as the future-proof backbone of sustainable heating and cooling.

Insights from Costa Rica & South Africa and the GIZ Greener Reefers project
This session discussed and demonstrated technological alternatives using natural refrigerants based on experiences from the Greener Reefers project in Costa Rica and South Africa and opened the floor for discussing the possibilities for the MAC sector. 

Visions and Lessons Learnt by the German Bilateral Cooperation
In this side event, we explained our approach and showcased examples of technology transfers in different refrigeration and air conditioning (RAC) subsectors around the globe, drawing on 30 years of Proklima’s experience. To discuss this we were joined by guest speakers Heidi Stockhaus (German Federal Ministry for the Environment, Climate Action, Nature Conservation and Nuclear Safety), Leslie Smith (NOU Grenada) and Federico San Martini (MLF Secretariat). 

By presenting various case studies for the implementation of climate- and environmentally-friendly solar cooling technology, we invite decision-makers to consider solar cooling technologies with natural refrigerants and blowing agents as a solution for their cooling needs, especially to strengthen cold chains (refrigeration) and cooling in buildings (air-conditioning).
