As part of the Energy Division in Grenada's Ministry of Finance, the National Ozone Unit (NOU) is responsible for the political implementation of the commitments set out in the Montreal Protocol.
The NOU's main task is to fulfil Grenada's obligations under the Montreal Protocol. This included the phase-out of chlorufluorocarbons (CFCs) in 2010, which was already achieved in 2006. Grenada is also on a promising path with regard to the phasing out of ozone depleting substances (ODS) such as hydrofluorcarbons (HFCs) regulated under the Kigali Amendment, for which it has repeatedly received much international recognition.
This success is mainly due to the concrete measures implemented by the NOU, such as the training of refrigeration and air-conditioning (RAC) technicians in environmentally friendly technologies that protect the ozone layer, the introduction of a quota system to regulate the importation of ODS and a labelling standard for the safe use, handling and storage of ODS.
