Solar Cooling Engineering is a spinoff company of the Institute of Agricultural Engineering of the University of Hohenheim in Germany. Its mission is to raise awareness on the use of solar energy for refrigeration with focus on the agricultural sector of non-industrialized rural areas. SCE provides technical support to local companies and entrepreneurs willing to commercialize small and medium solar cooling systems. Solar Polar designs and makes solar thermal technology including solar cooling, solar heating and cooking. 1.5 Bn people worldwide live without grid electricity. At least half of them could benefit from an off-grid cooling system for uses such as medicines and food. This would have a massive socio-economic impact. In addition to this, we forecast that an average Mediterranean home using 4 kW of solar cooling would save approximately 13,000 kWh per year. This means saving €3,000 and 7 tonnes of CO2.
