Insights from Costa Rica & South Africa and the GIZ Greener Reefers project
This session discussed and demonstrated technological alternatives using natural refrigerants based on experiences from the Greener Reefers project in Costa Rica and South Africa and opened the floor for discussing the possibilities for the MAC sector.
96% of the current maritime cooling containers are using R134a as refrigerant, which is damaging to both climate and environment. This HFC is also the very commonly used as refrigerant for cars and trucks, but subject to the phase-down under the Kigali Amendment.
Arno Kaschl (EU Commission) & Salome Margaret Solefe (Department of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment, South Africa) joined us to talk about the potential and challenges in the transition towards a more sustainable Mobile Air Conditioning sector and to discuss how the project Greener Reefers is contributing to that change.
