At the COP23 in Bonn in October, GIZ Proklima of the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) successfully held a side event on the potential of sustainable cooling in supporting the International Climate Agenda. Over 40 participants attended the event, during which the significance of the Kigali Amendment for the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and the Paris Agreement was discussed.

The Kigali Amendment is expected to avoid hydrofluorocarbon (HFC) emissions equivalent to 72 billion tons of carbon dioxide by 2050. This first ever legally binding agreement to phase-down powerful greenhouse gases (GHG) is a crucial step in efforts to limit global warming and achieve several Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Moreover, participants examined how integrating the cooling sector into Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) may support a sustainable future. The side event was proudly hosted by the Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ (Ouvrira une nouvelle fenêtre)).
