The Vietnam National Standards and Quality Institute (VSQI), in collaboration with GIZ Proklima, organized a Consultation Meeting on national standard revision of TCVN 7830 – Energy Performance of Non-ducted Air Conditioners. Held in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City in June, the meeting brought together representatives from government agencies, research institutes, universities, businesses, testing and certification organizations as well as other stakeholders in the air conditioning sector.
In his opening remarks, Dr. Trieu Viet Phuong, Director of VSQI, emphasized that reviewing and enhancing energy performance requirements for room air conditioners is key to implementing the Party and State’s direction on the economical and efficient use of energy, ensuring energy security and fulfilling Viet Nam’s commitments to reducing greenhouse gas emissions. The meeting serves as a forum where regulatory bodies, experts and businesses exchange views and contribute to refining the draft revised National Standard of Energy Performance for Non-ducted Air Conditioners.
On behalf of GIZ, Mr. Tran Tien Hoa shared international perspectives on the use of energy in the air conditioning sector. According to EVN, air conditioners have recently accounted for between 30% and 60% of the total household electricity consumption. He stated that Viet Nam joined the Global Cooling Pledge and set goals that by 2030, it would enhance the efficiency of cooling devices to around 50% compared to 2022 levels. Across ASEAN, countries are also working towards achieving a Minimum Energy Performance (MEPS) of 6.09 by 2030. Mr. Hoa further noted that Viet Nam is facing increasing challenges related to energy security and rising energy costs. Given this context, the Accelerating Air Conditioning Transformation through Enhanced Energy Performance Standard (ACT MEPS) project, implemented by GIZ since 2013, plays an important role in the transition towards high-efficiency cooling devices. Furthermore, he hoped that the insights gained from the meeting would contribute to the finalization and release of the revised TCVN 7830 later this year.
