Membre ECOS – Environmental Coalition on Standards
A non-profit organisation for environmental standards within the EU ECOS is a non-profit organisation working to ensure that standards, product ecological policies and labelling schemes reflect the societal perspective and take into account the environmental interests. ECOS’ work aims to combat climate change, foster energy and resource efficiency and protect environmental health. By fighting for environmental concerns to be included in standards, ECOS has contributed to improve the environmental performance of products during their whole life-cycle, warrant sound measurement methods for pollutants and energy-savings and ensure the provision of clear information to consumers towards sustainable consumption. …
Meilleures pratiques Policymaking: Improving safety standards for natural refrigerants
Upon request of the European Commission to help draft the F-Gas Standardization Request, ECOS actively raises awareness of the large obstacles to the use of low-GWP refrigerants within the same standards permitting large quantities of climate damaging HFCs. In realizing that urgent changes’ in standards are necessary to ‘achieve the EU phase-down targets’, ECOS is engaging with all relevant stakeholders in order to promote the market introduction of natural refrigerants. Whilst interest in the use of natural refrigerants in commercial & industrial RAC appliances is growing, market and product development is obstructed by the charge size limits given in product safety standards. …
Meilleures pratiques Liquid ice containers for refrigerated transport
Since 2016, Colruyt has been transporting its fresh products in self-developed refrigerated containers. The Liquid Ice Containers (LIC) keep the products cool with liquid ice and are 73% more climate-friendly than the classic refrigerated containers that use CO2. Colruyt has recently started to use even more eco-friendly liquid ice containers for the transport of frozen products to the shops. Liquid ice is a frozen but liquid mixture of water and ethanol or salt. The refrigerant with minuscule grains of ice has a much lower climate impact than the current alternatives. …
Meilleures pratiques Propane compact chillers for commercial cooling
Colruyt Group choose propane compact chillers as the standard solution for commercial cooling in its' food shops in Belgium and Luxembourg. Cold brine (MPG) is used to distribute cold to the refrigerated cabinets and the cold rooms. The condenser is being cooled with the same MPG, so the heat is released outside with drycoolers or the waste heat is used to heat the shop. This layout allows for a very low refrigerant content of under 4,3 kg. The ventilated enclosure design means that no ATEX zoning exists outside the chiller. The connections are made with fast release flexible couplings, thus allowing redundancy and quick exchange of a chiller when it is broken. This reduces pressure on the internal maintenance team, which add to the safety of the solution. …

How can the right choice of technology help protect the environment? Which policies can countries chose to enter a climate-friendly pathway? How to reverse ozone layer depletion? In times of climate emergency, HEAT provides advisory services as well as capacity building for the future. With a history of supporting Germany, as well as developing countries and economies in transition in their fight against the depletion of the earth’s protective ozone layer, the sustainable transition of the refrigeration and cooling sector is still at the core of our work. In particular, we provide emission inventories and mitigation pathways, advice on the development of policies, regulations and standards, as well as engineering services. We passionately develop capacity building and training to anchor knowledge on climate-friendly and energy-efficient technologies in our project partners’ countries and institutions. HEAT has implemented more than 300 projects in over 25 years. Our 40 staff members and experts currently assist projects in 30 countries. …
Meilleures pratiques Sectoral mitigation strategy – Transport refrigeration in South Africa
HEAT regularly applies a sectoral approach when striving to reduce emissions. Greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions inventories, low-carbon roadmaps and real-life pilot projects can effectively support sector transformation and low-carbon strategies. Aiming at the reduction of emissions from refrigerated transport in South Africa, HEAT supported the GIZ project Mitigating Emissions in the Transport Refrigeration Sector in South Africa in 2013-2017, funded by the Federal Ministry of the Environment, Nature Conservation and Nuclear Safety (BMU). HEAT identified measures to reduce emissions from refrigerated transport in trucks. The switch to natural refrigerant-based cooling systems and increased efficiency of those systems led to less direct emissions from the refrigerants and less indirect emissions from diesel to operate the equipment. Together with Transfrig, the leading local manufacturer, our experts developed and tested prototypes of climate-friendly refrigeration systems with 30% less energy consumption. Contribution to climate resilience: An improved cold chain leads to better food security and less health risks associated with perishable food. Optimized logistics and more efficient refrigeration systems cause less air pollution than conventional systems. Working with local companies regarding innovative technologies enhances vocational training, job opportunities and supports local operators and technology providers in their efforts to “green” their business. Moreover, the sector strategy introduced Measuring, Reporting and Verification (MRV) system procedures that can also be applied in other sectors. …
Meilleures pratiques Production conversion to natural refrigerants
The number of room air conditioners is rising quickly throughout the world and especially in developing countries with warm climates. According to IEA, there could be over 3.7 billion room ACs in use in 2050. Emissions from room air conditioning will increase dramatically. Besides the decarbonisation of energy supply, increasing the appliances’ energy efficiency and using climate-friendly natural refrigerants are the only way towards zero-carbon and “green” cooling. HEAT has supported a pioneering room AC production conversion project which was implemented by GIZ and funded by the Federal Ministry of the Environment, Nature Conservation and Nuclear Safety (BMU). The Indian manufacturer Godrej ozone- and climate-friendly natural refrigerant R290 and started selling it in 2012. HEAT experts provided technical support for the new product design with a special focus on energy efficient and safe operation. HEAT also supported the elaboration of technicians training regarding the safe handling of flammable refrigerants in this context. In several related projects, HEAT experts have assisted the conversion to natural refrigerants in the production of household refrigerators as well as to natural blowing agents in the production of foam. …

Since 1896: because experience counts We are an owner-managed family business specialising in the field of industrial refrigeration technology. In 1896, the company's founder, Theodor Witt, started out in Aachen as a plant manufacturer for brewer-ies. He built automated refrigeration systems with the refrigerant ammonia (NH3) completely in-house. The principle of mechanical high-pressure float regulators that he developed at that time can still be found in industrial plants today. Since the 1950s, the company has increasingly changed from a supplier of complete refrigeration sys-tems to a supplier of components. These were increasingly also distributed internationally via a network of independent WITT representatives. In 2010, we finally ended our own refrigeration system construction in order to focus completely on the further development of components. Today, we offer you a reliable partnership worldwide with system solutions consisting of standardised, high-quality components and units. The many years of experience are reflected in well thought-out details of our products, which guarantee high quality, reliability in operation and easy handling. You also benefit from this experience when it comes to consulting and services: We plan, design and manufacture pressure vessel units professionally according to your requirements and design refrigerant pumps and high-pressure float regulators to meet your needs. For 125 years we have already preferred the use of the natural refrigerants NH3 and carbon dioxide (CO2), which mean the right choice from an energy and ecological point of view. The mission: our significant contribution to your success • Benefit from our in-depth expertise and holistic understanding of the refrigeration process: we under-stand your requirements and offer custom-fit solutions. • Let us help you meet your requirements: we see ourselves as your partner and are there when you need us. • Gain security of supply: our business relationships and products are designed for the long term. • To help you move forward, we continue to develop: through continuous improvement and openness to new ideas. • Concentrate on your core business: we make meeting your requirements as easy and pleasant as possible. • Be prepared for the future with us: we are sustainably oriented, not only in our relationship with our business partners and employees, in terms of the quality and functionality of our products and with regard to the conservation of natural resources. passionate. competent. for your success. …
