University, Research and Training Platform Founded in 2012 after a merger between the IST (Institut Supérieur de Technologie) of Camp Levieux and Swami Dayanand Institute of Management (SDIM) of Pamplemousses, the ‘Université Des Mascareignes’ (UDM) has some 1,100 students that are currently enrolled in courses at degree level. UDM was founded in 2012 and is the fourth public university in Mauritius. This new tertiary institution provides an opportunity for students from both institutions to continue their degree, unlike the old system that allows them to only obtain a diploma. Recall that IST has delivered its first classes in the preparatory cycle in September 1998. The SDIM was inaugurated in July 1995 with the goal to provide education and training to students in the areas of Information & Communication Technology, Finance and Marketing. These students are destined to work in the service sector. "The merger of the two institutions will be beneficial to the development of higher education in Mauritius”. Thus, the degrees are both from UDM and the University of Limoges in France, according to the European LMD system, which allows students to earn degrees in Mauritius recognized internationally. Another feature of the UDM is that classes are bilingual and programs are designed considering the needs of the socio-economic world. In cooperation with the Hawaii Natural Energy Institute, Sustainable Design & Consulting LLC (SDC) implemented a project to test space conditioning systems termed “comfort islands”. Comfort island provide locally limited comfort conditions for occupants, hereby avoiding the conditioning of an entire space. Localized spaces with comfort islands are not dehumidified, and therefore a large amount of cooling for latent heat removal can be spared. Ideally installed comfort islands can provide energy savings of up to 70% compared with conventional space heating. …

Introduced by Shecco in 2009, the Natural Voice is a global statement open to industry, associations, non-profit organizations and individuals supporting the potential of natural refrigerants in replacing potent greenhouse gases. At present, the Natural Voice has 109 signatories from a range of sectors and industries. The statement will be presented to national governments and international climate negotiators in the near future to build the basis for developing natural refrigerant initiatives around the world. The Natural Voice demands national governments to remove (inter)national trade barriers and to revise safety standards, codes and legislation that restrict the use of natural refrigerants without merit. Furthermore, it calls upon national governments to provide (non-) financial support for the research and promotion of natural refrigerants, and to facilitate the technology transfer from developed to developing countries. …
