Standards are developed by representatives from industry and are important references for the safe design and handling of refrigeration and air conditioning systems. In order to prevent harm to people and the environment, safety standards can be made mandatory. This is done by referring to standards within national legal provisions.
However, standards can also be a major barrier for the deployment of natural refrigerants. This is the case where standards unnecessarily limit the use of natural refrigerants i.e. due to their flammability.
Standards are being developed on an international, European and national level. Some national standards, such as the US ASHRAE standards are globally recognised.
