2020Best practiceProduct: Ice by night, air-conditioning by day: the TSU-C/D ice thermal storage
The TSU-C/D ice thermal storage unit by the Baltimore Aircoil Company (BAC) provides a constant near-freezing water (1-2 °C) supply for applications such as food processing, breweries and dairies at the lowest first cost. The external melt system of the TSU-C/D unit stores cooling as ice when cooling demand and/or energy rates are low (mostly overnight), and releases cooling for air-conditioning when cooling demand and/or energy rates are high (usually daytime). As the TSU-C/D forms ice overnight when electricity costs are cheapest and condensing temperatures are lowest, operational costs as well as the carbon footprint are lowered. As with all BAC cooling towers, the TSU-C/D model is independently certified by the Cooling Technology Institute (CTI), hereby ensuring that published thermal capacities reflect actual thermal performance. This eliminates the need for customers to perform costly individual cooling tower testing. …
2020Best practiceProduct: India’s first R290 air conditioner
Since developing India’s first commercially available hydrocarbon (R290) air conditioner in 2012 in collaboration with GIZ and the Indian government, Godrej & Boyce have sold over 100,000 air conditioning units and now boast an annual production capacity of 180,000 units. Given the lack of national standards for natural refrigerants in India, Godrej & Boyce filled a market gap when developing the country’s first R290 air conditioning technology. The family business received an investment grant from the German Environment Ministry’s International Climate Initiative (IKI). The green technology was designed to find a balance between electricity consumption and environmental impact. With an Energy Efficiency Ratio (EER) of 3.9, the R290 ACs save up to 10% energy compared to five-star air-conditioners. Godrej & Boyce now hold a 13% market share in the five-star AC market in India, making it the third largest shareholder. Current models are restricted by a hydrocarbon charge size limit of 350 grams and 12,000-18,000 British thermal units, but Godrej & Boyce is seeking technological support from other manufacturers to achieve higher capacities. …
2020Best practiceProduct: Integral refrigerant system with propane (X-TCDH)
In 2010, Thermofin started the design process of an integral system capable of producing the necessary refrigerating demand for chilling units and cold storage rooms as well as provide air condition in the sales areas and supply underfloor heating of supermarkets. The X-TCDH technology uses the natural refrigerant propane (R290). The system uses a 130kW refrigeration system in combination with a 40kW heat pump. Cooling is indirect through the secondary refrigerant propylene glycol; if very low temperatures are required, an extra cooling unit can be added to the system as a CO2 cascade. In addition to providing cooling and heating using an environmentally-friendly refrigerant, the compact system also achieves high efficiencies and investment savings. …
2020Best practiceProduct: KRONOS water-cooled chillers
The KRONOS series from Secon is specially designed for water-cooled applications and also uses the natural and highly efficient refrigerant propane (R290). All units have their own enclosure with gas monitoring and ATEX hazardous area ventilation and can be installed in suitable machinery rooms. Alternatively, the units are also available with a weatherproof housing for outdoor installation. The series covers cooling capacities from 60 to 700 kW and can be used in a wide temperature range with outlet temperatures from +20 to -35°C. LT models use propylene (R1270), which is also a natural refrigerant. The units can be equipped with 1 to 4 reciprocating compressors. The capacity control is either stepped or stepless with inverters. The units already have a special, highly developed control system as standard. Optionally, they can also be equipped with a Siemens S7 industrial control system. …
2020Best practiceProduct: Magnetic fields for refrigeration purposes
Ubiblue's Compact Magnetic Refrigeration System (MRS) is a stand-alone unit with a refrigeration power of 400W and a temperature span of 25°C, making it the ideal solution for a range of small-scale applications. The use of permanent magnets may reduce energy costs by up to 50%. Magnetic cooling is becoming an ever-increasing solution used for the cold industry. In a MRS, a controlled magnetic field applies a series of magnetization-demagnetization cycles to the magnetocaloric alloys. Each cycle produces a temperature gradient in the material, and a rapid succession of these cycles produces the final and stabilized hot and cold temperatures in the refrigeration system. Moreover, the MRS uses glycol as a coolant, such that is not environmentally harmful. This technology resolves the two main concerns regarding compressor-bases refrigeration systems: the environmental issue via a gas-free solution as well as the economic issue by using permanent magnets that dramatically reduce energy consumption. …
2020Best practiceProduct: Minus 10 - Hydrocarbon refrigerant for domestic & commercial refrigerators
Hychill’s Minus 10 is a high-purity, isobutane (R600a) refrigerant used in state-of-the art commercial and domestic refrigeration. It provides all benefits associated with hydrocarbon refrigerants while simultaneously avoiding environmental damage and global warming. Minus 10 was developed primarily for use in purpose built systems designed for R600a, including light commercial systems, wine coolers and drink display cabinets. Reduced operating pressure and excellent heat absorption capacity provide users with up to 30% energy consumption reduction. Its superior thermodynamic properties make it an ideal refrigerant for use in 6-star Energy Efficiency rating systems. …
2020Best practiceProduct: Minus 30 - Hydrocarbon refrigerant for mobile air conditioning
Hychill’s Minus 30 is a mixture of isobutane (R600a) and propane (R290), two hydrocarbon refrigerant gases, and is designed for use in automotive air conditioning systems and medium temperature refrigeration units. Minus 30 provides all benefits associated with hydrocarbon refrigerants while simultaneously avoiding environmental damage and global warming. Minus 30 is ideal for use in small commercial refrigeration and air-conditioning systems where R12 has traditionally been used. It provides superior efficiency, lower cooling temperatures, extended ambient temperature operating range and reliable performance. The reduced operating pressure and excellent heat absorption capacity provide consumers with a reduction in fuel consumption of up to 20%. Hydrocarbon refrigerants are flammable, and therefore require accredited technicians to install and maintain them. HyChill hydrocarbon refrigerants carry a distinctive “rotting cabbage” odour so that any leak is immediately noticed and rectified. …
