PTC-Based Solar Thermal System for Industrial Process Heat and Cooling

Subsectors: Industrial Refrigeration

The PTC-based solar thermal system implemented by Soliterm Group and MMG in Tire, Izmir (Türkiye) is a reference project for low-carbon industrial energy supply through high-temperature solar heat and process cooling applications. The system is based on parabolic trough collector (PTC) technology as the core enabling component for renewable thermal energy generation. The system provides high-temperature solar thermal energy at 180–190°C, supplying industrial process heat while also supporting process cooling applications through thermally driven energy use. This replaces conventional fossil fuel-based energy inputs, resulting in significant reductions in greenhouse gas emissions and improved energy efficiency in industrial production processes. With a total solar collection area of 10,000 m² and 500 parabolic trough collectors, the plant achieves a peak thermal capacity of 3.5 MWth. The generated thermal energy is directly integrated into industrial process chains, enabling stable and predictable renewable energy supply for energy-intensive applications. Since its commissioning in 2022, the system has achieved annual CO₂ emission reductions of approximately 3,000 tons, corresponding to a cumulative reduction of 12,000 tons to date. The project demonstrates a scalable and replicable model for integrating PTC-based solar thermal energy into industrial process heat and cooling systems, supporting the transition toward climate-neutral and resource-efficient industrial production.
