Environment Protection Agency Sierra Leone (EPA-SL)

Government Institution Subsectors: Commercial Refrigeration, Domestic refrigeration, Industrial Refrigeration, Mobile air conditioning

The EPA-SL is a government owned agency responsible for the protection of the environment. Established in 2008 by an act of parliament, the EPA-SL became fully functional in 2010. The agency is the focal point for all multilateral environmental agreements and plays the lead role in the implementation of the Montreal Protocol for the control of the production and consumption of ozone depleting substances and its amendments.
In November of 2023, Sierra Leone became a member of Climate Ozone Protection Alliance (COPA) and through its membership, Sierra Leone has started enjoying the associated benefits in the area of capacity building, technical support for end of life refrigerants management and exchange programs in the form of networking with other COPA members.
Furthermore, the EPA-SL through its National Ozone Unit (NOU) with the support of Multilateral Fund Secretariat through the implementing agencies like UNEP, GIZ and UNIDO undertakes awareness raising activities for Refrigeration and air-conditioning (RAC) technicians, importers, customs officers and other law enforcement officers and other stakeholders. We also engage in technology transfer, showcasing acceptable and available technologies using natural refrigerants (e.g. R-290, HC etc.) in the field of refrigeration and air-conditioning aimed at the protection of the Ozone layer, climate and the environment. In addition, we undertake capacity building training programs for RAC technicians to match them with the rapidly evolving RAC sector.
