green cooling initiative: Company

Unitary air conditioning Godrej & Boyce Mfg. Co. Ltd.

India’s first manufacturer to convert to hydrocarbons

Godrej was the first Indian company to manufacture hydrocarbon fridges in the 1990s. In 2012, Godrej & Boyce Mfg. Co. Ltd. launched a new production line for split air-conditioners using propane (HC-290). The new models consume less energy than the current models with the highest energy efficiency ratings from other brands available in India.

Best practices:

  • Product: India’s first hydrocarbon refrigerators

Since developing India’s first commercially available hydrocarbon (R290) air conditioner in 2012 in collaboration with GIZ and the Indian government, Godrej & Boyce have sold over 100,000 air conditioning units and now boast an annual production capacity of 180,000 units.

  • Project: Room air-conditioner conversion project

Between 2008 and 2013, GIZ Proklima, on behalf of the German Environmental Ministry, supported the Indian company Godrej & Boyce to introduce hydrocarbon-driven (R290) split and room air conditioners to the Indian Market.
