In the context of the World Ozone Day 2024 on 16 September, natural refrigerants were promoted in a talk show in the Kenyan broadcast station Citizen TV. On 11 September, 5:30-7:30pm (UTC) four panelists from various sectors discussed the importance of the transition to future friendly technology for the planet.
Climate change and global warming are strongly connected to the cooling sector as it accounts for up to 10% of global greenhouse gas emissions. But: There are political and technical solutions.
The project Green Cooling Initiative (III) Proklima promotes the introduction of energy efficient appliances with natural refrigerants in Kenya to reduce emissions. The panel deals with the problem of the climate crisis and ozone hole on the global and the Kenyan national level. As Kenya is part of the Montreal protocol including the Kigali amendments – which are the respective international treaties – the country is working on its national strategy to tackle these problems.
Representing the Kenyan government, Linda Kosgei, Head of Mulilateral Environmental Agreements, shared the political perspective on the topic. On the other side, Kibet Rugut from the Association of refrigeration and air conditioning represented the view of the market. Philipp Denzinger from GIZ Proklima and the Green Cooling Initiative III shared the EU perspective and introduce Green Cooling solutions. Additionally, the climate advocate Anita Sonia contributed from the perspective of women and climate advocates.
