How to integrate the cooling sector in the NDCs
Our side event showed guidelines, tools, and best practices. As a highlight, we launched our newest module showcasing how progress and achievements of mitigation measures included in the NDCs can be measured and reported.
The refrigeration and air conditioning (RAC) sector is responsible for up to 10% of global GHG emissions. Reducing these emissions is important to achieve the objectives of the Paris Agreement. Green Cooling solutions exist for almost all RAC sub-sectors, and they are very cost-efficient and considered as “low-hanging fruits”.
In this side event, the experts Irene Papst and Leslie Smith explained why it is crucial for countries to leverage the cooling sector for ambitious Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs). Irene (HEAT GmbH) presented helpful tools and step-by-step guidelines. Her focus was on our new “mini-module”: “Exemplary Monitoring, Reporting, and Verification (MRV) system for a mitigation action in the cooling sector. Intervention to support the deployment of solar photovoltaic systems to run cooling systems”.
Leslie Smith, National Ozone Officer from Grenada, gave inspiring insights on why and how Grenada integrated the cooling sector into their NDCs.
The following discussion showed that countries are still facing challenges. Leslie and Irene encouraged them to take actions anyways. One of the most important steps: talk to your climate and energy colleagues!
