Find here all recordings and presentations from the 2nd day of the Green Cooling Summit: Sustainable Cooling and Heating in Buildings.
The virtual Summit jointly organized by the German Environment Agency (UBA (opens in a new window)) and GIZ Proklima on behalf of the German Federal Ministry for the Environment, Climate Action, Nature Conversation and Nuclear Safety (BMUKN) (opens in a new window) highlights how solutions using natural refrigerants are beneficial for the environment, the climate, and the people. It demonstrates that these solutions are available and competitive, making them a future-proof option.

In the fourth session of the Green Cooling Summit 2025, international experts from intergovernmental organisation and academia presented passive strategies for reducing cooling demand. The session started with Marco Schmidt from TU Berlin, who introduced approaches to energy-efficient passive cooling and shading. He was followed by Dr. Yosr Allouche from the International Institute of Refrigeration, who presented emerging technologies to strengthen access to sustainable cooling in response to extreme heat. The third speaker of this session was Professor Mark Nieuwenhuijsen from the Institute for Global Health. He highlighted the role of green cooling in urban environments, drawing on a health impact assessment of European cities that examined the benefits of urban green infrastructure.
- 00:39 - 12:13: Input by Marco Schmidt (TU Berlin)
- 13:07 - 28:00: Input by Dr. Yosr Allouche (IIR)
- 28:30 - 42:25: Input by Prof. Mark Nieuwenhuijsen (Institute for Global Health)
- 42:40 - End: Q&A

The fifth session of the Green Cooling Summit 2025 focused on room cooling and heating, with a particular emphasis on experiences with natural refrigerants. Ole Nielsen from Öko-Recherche opened the session with a global overview of R-290-based air conditioners and heat pumps. Following this, Mustafa Abunofal from the Cool Up programme shared insights on how to scale up efficient and sustainable cooling solutions using natural refrigerants to address the challenges of extreme heat.
- Beginning - 19:30: Input by Ole Nielsen (Öko-Recherche)
- 19:52 - 35:44: Input by Mustafa Abunofa (Cool up)
- 36:00 - End: Q&A
Session 6
Challenges and opportunities of sustainable cooling and heating in buildings
Session 6 of the Green Cooling Summit 2025 offered participants the opportunity to engage in in-depth discussions with the speakers in various breakout rooms, focusing on the challenges and opportunities of sustainable cooling and heating in buildings.

The Green Cooling Summit 2025 concluded with a closing reflection by Program Manager Guntram Glasbrenner from GIZ Proklima and moderator Julika Schmitz. Together, they summarised key lessons learnt from the summit and addressed open questions: What progress has been made in sustainable cooling and heating? Which challenges remain unresolved, and what strategies are needed to overcome them? Their wrap-up highlighted both the momentum within the sector and the need for continued collaboration, innovation and policy support to drive the global transition forward.
