Given that the cooling sector has a significant role in global greenhouse gas emissions, transitioning to climate and environmentally friendly solutions is the only solution. The TV session raised awareness on Kenya’s progress regarding policy compliance as well as the promotion of green cooling solutions with a focus on more climate and environmentally friendly (natural) refrigerants and energy efficient equipment.

The discussion featured three panelists representing key sectors: The Ministry of Environment Climate Change and Forestry (MoECCF), GIZ as the development partner, and HEVAC Association Kenya representing the industry. They highlighted the country's progress as a signatory to the Montreal Protocol with emphasis on:

  • Phasing out ozone depleting substances, through national policies aligned to the Montreal Protocol and its Kigali Amendment

  • The existing Green Cooling technologies and practices that Kenya has adopted
  • The availability of cooling appliances that are highly energy efficient and use natural refrigerants in the Kenyan market.

For reaching these goals, GIZ Proklima is closely collaborating with the MoECCF and is funded by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ), the German Federal Ministry for the Environment, Climate Action, Nature Conservation and Nuclear Safety (BMUKN) under the International Climate Initiative (IKI), and the French Agence Française de Développement (AFD).
