Kenya’s commemoration of World Ozone Day 2025, held under the theme From Science to Global Action, recognized the importance of coordinated international efforts to protect the ozone layer and combat climate change. GIZ Kenya has been implementing the Montreal Protocol for almost 30 years with funding from Germany and France, positioning the country at the forefront of climate action by promoting climate- and environmentally friendly cooling solutions.
The national celebrations took place at Michuki Park in Nairobi and were attended by Dr. Deborah Barasa, Cabinet Secretary of the Ministry of Environment, Climate Change and Forestry, Maria Socorro,Deputy Executive Secretary of UNEP's Ozone Secretariat, and Maren Kneller, Head of Development Cooperation of the German Embassy in Kenya. The speakers highlighted the various measures Kenya has undertaken as part of its climate action and reaffirmed their institutions' continuous commitment to supporting the country's climate strategy, and its transitions towards sustainability and green cooling.
GIZ Proklima's work in Kenya is funded by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ), the German Federal Ministry for the Environment, Climate Action, Nature Conservation and Nuclear Safety (BMUKN) under the International Climate Initiative (IKI), and the French Development Agency Agence Française de Développement (AFD).
