On 2nd of December 2025, 80 green split R290 air-conditioning units were officially handed over to various technical training institutions under the GRACE Project, in a handover event organized by the Ministry of Environment, Climate Change and Forestry (MoECCF) and GIZ Proklima. These units were part of a total of 200 R290 ACs that have been donated to 28 training institutions (TVET, polytechnics, universities) and demonstration projects in Kenya by GIZ Proklima, this year alone.
The continuous collaboration between the German and Kenyan governments has made effort in implementing Kenya’s green cooling transition as per the Montreal Protocol and the Kigali Amendment and national regulations. As a continuation of the efforts in promoting climate and environmentally friendly cooling solutions in Kenya by the previous green cooling projects, the newly commissioned GRACE Project takes up the mantle to ensure this continuity.
The handover event highlighted the use of R290 ACs which are energy efficient and use R290 (propane) which is a natural refrigerant and is more climate and environmentally friendly compared to the synthetic alternatives.
Given the expanding refrigeration and air conditioning sector, in Kenya, the donation will serve as an important step towards investing in more environmentally and climate friendly room cooling solutions. As part of the handover event 80 green split air conditioning units were donated to 9 technical training institutions as well as to the Ministry of Environment, Climate Change and Forestry. The ceremony was graced by representatives from the Ministry of Environment Ministry of Environment, Climate Change and Forestry (MoECCF), GIZ Proklima as well as representatives from the technical training institutes.

To ensure the safe installation and maintenance of the ACs, trainers and technicians in the institutions which the AC units have been donated, have been trained on the safe handling of the R290 ACs.
Other key achievements for 2025:
- Training of RAC technicians in January on the safe handling of R290 ACs
- Donation of tools and other equipment to selected training institutes
- Donation of 35 ACs to 3 hospitals for demonstration purposes
- Training of trainers session for 30 RAC trainers from various training institutions in Kenya as well as participants from eight other African countries in the safe handling of R290 (A3/A2L) Split ACs
The Green Room Air Conditioning (GRACE) Project is commissioned by the German Federal Ministry for the Environment, Climate Action, Nature Conservation and Nuclear Safety (BMUKN) within the International Climate Initiative (IKI) and implemented by GIZ Proklima.
