The IKI funded project Climate and Ozone Protection Alliance (COPA) has come to an end. The Alliance itself continues beyond the project.
The COPA alliance has grown and is now ready to change the world. In 2022, the journey began. Four years ago, there was recognition that managing ODS and HFC banks is important for the ozone layer and climate protection. However, despite demonstration projects, research, and dedicated actors, the topic still felt like a blind spot. With demand for cooling and air conditioning on the rise and ODS and HFC banks growing, the German government recognized that something had to be done. With COPA, the spotlight was directed to the problem, while at the same time providing a platform for advancing a global sustainable refrigerant management.
The Climate and Ozone Protection Alliance aims to unite voices, raise global attention, and provide a platform for learning, sharing, and moving forward together. It combines perspectives and expertise from governments, the private sector, civil society, academia, and financial institutions.
This alliance thrives on its members' contributions. With 81 members, and counting each one adds value, resources, and plays a role in addressing ODS and HFC banks.
Everyone is encouraged to continue to be actively involved in COPA and develop new solutions beneficial to your institutions, countries, and our planet. Every single kilogram well managed, best recycled directly on the spot, otherwise with an infrastructure to recover and reclaim refrigerants established, will make a difference. Now and in the future.
The COPA Secretariat has been shifted from GIZ and is now managed by Mengjia Li (UNIDO) and Jomari Guillermo (UNDP), who will continue to support the alliance and its members going forward.
