Green Cooling Africa Week in South Africa

Embarking on climate-friendly refrigeration and air-conditioning development pathways in Africa

Supported by the International Climate Initiative (IKI) of the German Federal Ministry of the Environment, Nature Conservation, Building and Nuclear Safety (BMUB), GIZ, in cooperation of the South African Department of Environmental Affairs (DEA) and the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI), has organized the Green Cooling Africa Week (GCAW), which took place from June 7-10, 2016, in Centurion, South Africa. Around 40 relevant stakeholders and policy-makers from 12 African countries discussed and learn about the activities of the Green Cooling Initiative (GCI), Green Cooling Africa Initiative (GCAI), CTCN, Green Cooling technology and policy issues, the development of nationally appropriate mitigation actions (NAMAs) in the refrigeration and air-conditioning sector, and about the transport refrigeration sector. The GCAW included a two days NAMA training.

Africa’s rapidly expanding middle class and changing lifestyles translate into growing demand for refrigeration and air-conditioning. In order to mitigate both direct and indirect emissions from the cooling sector, the introduction and diffusion of green cooling technologies is of vital importance. Best practices of projects worldwide will illustrate the use of natural refrigerants and energy-efficient cooling appliances.

Participants included besides GCI network members, national ozone officers and climate mitigation focal points from African countries, policy-makers from the ozone/climate/energy-efficiency sectors, RAC private sector representatives, as well as scientific institutions.

GCI presents at ATMOsphere Europe in Barcelona on the market potential of R290 AC units

The ATMOsphere Events hosted by Shecco are interactive workshops bringing together decision makers from industry and government to discuss on developments in natural refrigerant technologies and present on case studies, proving the safe application and efficiency of natural refrigerant applications.

Philipp Denzinger, Project Manager of the Green Cooling Initiative, presented the promising market potential of R290 AC units at this year’s ATMOsphere Europe in Barcelona on April 19, 2016. He highlighted the benefits of using R290 as a refrigerant in AC units: Higher energy efficiency, almost zero direct emissions (R290 GWP=3), higher cooling capacity and coefficient of performance. Challenges faced when applying hydrocarbons, such as flammability and limited charge sizes due to standards and building codes were equally subject of discussion, as well as ways to tackle them. : Godrej & Boyce (India), Gree, Midea, Haier, Aux, TCL, Chunlan, Yangtzi, Changhong (China) have production facilities for R290 AC units and managed to overcome these challenges. The presentation stressed the importance of the mutual influence of the market supply and demand of innovative systems. A growing market penetration is meant to increase the demand and awareness on the end user side and shall allow the production of cost efficient, sustainable and energy efficient AC units.

Following Denzinger’s presentation, Kai Cui – Director Strategy and Standardization of Haier – presented Haier’s plans for producing R290 AC units in at least five production lines in China.

Technology partnerships: Introducing the Green Cooling Initiative Africa

R-290 air conditioners in Ghana

Prognoses anticipate a rapid market expansion for unitary air-conditioning, as Ghana enjoys a comparatively stable economic growth and a high cooling demand due to its hot and humid climate. The RAC sector causes high GHG and ODS emissions since most appliances in Ghana have low energy efficiency and high leakage rates. The mitigation potential for unitary air-conditioning systems is estimated at 2.44 Mt CO2eq in 2030 when compared to a business-as-usual (BAU)-Scenario.
An exemplary technology partnership has been established between GCI, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the Ghana National Cleaner Production Centre (GNCPC). During a national workshop R-290 split ACs were demonstrated, and thirty further units ordered. Energy meters are being installed to monitor the energy consumption of the new appliances in different locations. Technical trainings have been conducted to ensure safe handling of the hydrocarbon refrigerant. The next steps will be the integration in Green Public Procurement strategies, public events to promote the R-290 technology, procurement of additional units as well as further trainings and monitoring (energy and performance).

Solar powered fish cold store in Kenya

GCI has started a partnership with the Kenyan Ministry of Environment, Natural Resources and Regional Development Authorities and the company “Lakeview Fisheries Ltd.” in order to reduce loss of food in the Kenyan fisheries industry by improving cold chain measures through the establishment of a solar powered climate-friendly and energy-efficient cold store. A successful workshop with potential investment partners from Western Kenya was held in December 2015. The green cold store has a state-of-the-art insulation, highly efficient refrigeration and ice making appliances that use natural refrigerants (R290), and are equipped with photovoltaic modules to reduce electricity grid dependency. GCI provides the initial technical blueprint, training of cold store builders, as well as training to replicable implementation. The first cold room will be operational by the second half of 2016. With an expected payback of less than three years, the business model will be highly replicable.

Green Cooling in the Sri Lankan Hotel Sector

The Jetwing Hotels Group, Sri Lanka has won the GCI Ideas Competition winners. The Sri Lankan based hotel group Jetwing Hotels is a pioneer in implementing sustainable and innovative technologies in the national hotel industry. Together with the Green Cooling Initiative Jetwing Hotels will install an absorption chiller for air conditioning of hotel facilities at the Jetwing Lagoon.

New data available on the GCI website

The country data on the GCI website allows you to explore a wide variety of data: refrigeration and air conditioning appliances in use, unit sales, emissions and emission mitigation potentials in the cooling sectors both today and in the future. In addition to the direct and indirect emission data, the country data subsection now portrays the energy use – current and future – in TWh for selected appliance sectors in each country under the indirect emissions category. Improving the energy efficiency of refrigeration and cooling appliances will reduce the electricity costs per household, lower the overall power demand and can in many cases prevent the construction of new power plants – all important factors for countries’ energy policies.

Larger charge sizes of R290 in air conditioners and commercial refrigeration cabinets may soon be included in relevant international standards. The Green Cooling Initiative supports the process of revising relevant standards under the working groups 4 and 6 of the IEC.

The following standards are currently under revision with particular focus on flammable refrigerants and charge size limits:

  • EN 60335-2-40: 2003+A2, 2009. Specification for safety of household and similar electrical appliances. Safety. Particular requirements for electrical heat pumps, air-conditioners, and dehumidifiers.
  • IEC 60335-2-89:2010+A1: 2012+A2: 2015 Household and similar electrical appliances – Safety – Part 2-89: Particular requirements for commercial refrigerating appliances with an incorporated or remote refrigerant unit or compressor
  • ISO 5149-1:2014+A1:2015 Refrigerating systems and heat pumps — Safety and environmental requirements

Revisions and amendments to these standards rely on intensive testing on simulated leaks for air conditioners and commercial cabinets which help monitor the behaviour and development of concentrations of R290. Charge sizes of up to 1 kg of R290 may be feasible under the revised IEC 60335-3-89.

United for Efficiency (U4E)

In April 2016, the GCI hosted two expert task force meetings on energy efficiency of refrigerators and room air conditioners. The meetings took place in Eschborn, Germany. Partners discussed topics such as the relevance of advanced minimum energy performance standards (MEPS).

GCI is a partner in the United for Efficiency Partnership (U4E). U4E works under the umbrella of the United Nations’ Sustainable Energy for All (SE4ALL) initiative. The initiative’s aim is to provide guidance on cost-effective ways to reduce electricity consumption and mitigate climate change. Find more information on U4E here.

GCI listed as a partnership for sustainable development goals

The Green Cooling Initiative is now listed as on the partnership for sustainable development goals (SDGs) platform. The Partnerships for SDGs online platform was launched in the lead-up to the United Nations Sustainable Development Summit for the adoption of the post-2015 development agenda. The new and fully accessible platform now provides a space for showcasing multi-stakeholder partnerships that conduct activities in those countries that take part in the national reviews. GCI Member BITZER opens new training facility for CO2 systems

In the beginning of 2016 BITZER opened the doors of the new SCHAUFLER Academy on their premises in Rottenburg-Ergenzingen, Germany. The training centre is dedicated to educating service technicians, system manufacturers, consultants and operators all around the globe. Especially in the fast evolving RAC sector, proper training and high quality education is needed. Handling natural refrigerants requires special knowledge about systems and components. BITZER now offers various courses at the SCHAUFLER Academy’s multifunctional building with three rooms for practical training and five rooms for theoretical work.

In addition to offering trainings on general thermodynamics, system design and safety issues, BITZER offers specific trainings on transcritical and subcritical CO2 systems. In these practical sessions, participants are taught to deal with operating demands, filling of systems and commissioning of new installations.

Does BITZER pursue a train-the-trainer concept to help the accelerated transfer of relevant knowledge on a global scale?

Currently there are no appropriately certified trainings. However, we take care that the relevant information is available where it is needed. This means at a global level as well. The SCHAUFLER Academy is active at a multinational level – through our training centres around the world, and we forward all training materials to our local BITZER training centres.

At the same time our employees spread the contents of the trainings in our subsidiaries. This ensures a flow of information on several levels. And this strategy turned out really well: the first trainings of the SCHAUFLER academy took place even before the official opening and the demand was immense. Since 2015 we have already counted more than 1000 visitors. Most came from abroad. No wonder! With an export share of more than 90% BITZER technology is in demand all over the world.

Is a participation for non-BITZER clients possible as well?

Absolutely – and we look forward to each participant. We generally see a great demand. Especially since the rapid technological progress and new regulations constantly increase the demand for well-trained specialists. Here the Academy makes an important contribution with a curriculum that is particularly focussed on the practice training sessions. We provide participants - such as planners, system builders and service personnel and operators - the necessary tools for the demanding tasks of day-to-day business with the simulation of realistic conditions.

Are there any plans to include more natural refrigerants in the training curricula (in addition to the CO2 and Ammonia courses)?

We do that already. As for us CO2 is one of the refrigerants of the future with its low global warming potential, our course programme has a clear focus on CO2 with over 35 courses in 2016. The first ammonia trainings took place in April of this year already. We have reserved a total of twelve dates 2016 for ammonia applications. In addition we will offer hydrocarbon training as of July this year. The training will for example involve the use of propane in refrigeration and air conditioning systems. And we have trainings for inverter driven compressors in the programme as well. Energy efficiency and environmental protection are essential components of BITZER’s corporate philosophy. Of course, we have the suitable compressors in the product portfolio for all these sustainable technologies. What distinguishes the SCHAUFLER Academy from other similar training facilities?

Compared to other similar training centres the SCHAUFLER Academy trains the BITZER employees, but also our customer and clients and everyone else who is interested in taking part in our trainings – this is part of the BITZER quality promise and our comprehensive service portfolio. Other schools in Germany focus more on the fundamentals of refrigeration technology, while we introduce the newest state of the art technology to our participants. That is why we offer a practice-oriented seminar program at the SCHAUFLER Academy, with fully operational installations using advanced compressor technology. This complements what other schools offer.

For our trainings, we make use of our employees’ potential which lies mainly in applications engineering but also in sales and product management. Our advantage: As our trainers are familiar with the issues that our customers are currently concerned with, they can address practitioners’ questions and challenges and offer help and corresponding solutions. To keep improving our courses, we are currently planning cooperation with other training centres. After all, BITZER is one of the industry’s driving innovators with an excellent international network. One example is the Green Cooling Initiative which connects experts and fosters transfer of technologies, thereby advancing environmentally friendly refrigeration and air conditioning technologies. This initiative has been initiated by the German Environmental Ministry and the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH.

Does the Academy offer its courses in various languages?

Due to our international focus we offer all courses in English. If a larger group is interested in a training to be conducted in another language, we will implement this together with our subsidiaries upon request.

GCI Members CIRCE and Shecco cooperating in the EU funded project SuperSmart

SuperSmart is a newly launched EU funded project aimed at achieving environmental benefits through a fast implementation of efficient heating and cooling solutions, as well as significant economic saving potentials through the reductions of the overall energy use in the supermarket sector in Europe.

CIRCE and Shecco are now among the partners supporting this project with their know-how and expertise on green cooling technologies and the accelerated transition to energy efficient and sustainable cooling solutions.

SuperSmart has three main objectives:

1. Removal of non-technological barriers to efficient and sustainable heating and cooling in the European supermarket sector

2. Raising the level of expertise amongst technical and non-technical staff

3. Supporting the introduction of a European Ecolabel for food retail stores.

The SuperSmart project partners invite manufacturers and end-users of heating and cooling solutions within the food retail sector to actively partake in the project and in the formulation of award criteria for the planned European Ecolabel. Country Profile*: South Africa

With a population of 53 million, an urbanisation rate of 63.3% and an electrification rate of 79.8%, South Africa's stock of cooling appliances is quite large compared to most other African countries: In 2014, the country had in use an estimated 1.33 billion domestic refrigerators, 840 million car air conditioners and 757 million unitary air conditioning appliances (All numbers according to GCI calculations - for more information see the GCI country data). Expected unit sales in these sectors are estimated to triple by 2030 (Figure 1).
The estimated overall emissions from the RAC sectors amount to 32.2 Mt CO2eq in 2015 (Figure 2).
In a business-as-usual scenario, this number is expected to rise to 81.1 Mt CO2eq in the year 2030. However, an estimated 29.4 Mt CO2eq could be saved in 2030 when considering the use of climate friendly natural refrigerants, changes in the system design and improvements in the energy efficiency (Figure 3).
About 40 % of the total emission reduction potential can be achieved through a change to climate friendly natural refrigerants (Figure 4).

Co- and Trigeneration: How to produce energy efficiently – A practical guide for experts in emerging and developing economies

Cogeneration and trigeneration (also known as Combined (Cooling) Heat and Power (C(C)HP)) are key technologies to unlock energy efficiency potential in many sectors such as commerce and industry, buildings and other public infrastructure.

The convincing advantage of this technology are high efficiencies of 30% and more resulting from one single generation process of power, heat and – for trigeneration – also cooling in comparison to separate electricity generation usually wasting vast amounts of heat. Additional strong benefits comprise CO2 and other GHG emissions reductions, NOx emission savings, as well as cost reductions based on better fuel efficiency and flexible, decentralized on-site plant operation, which helps to avoid energy losses and expensive grid upgrades over long distances.

The Guide ‘Cogeneration & Trigeneration - How to produce energy efficiently’, recently published by the GIZ sector programme ‚Technology Cooperation in the Energy Sector’ (TechKoop), financed by the Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ), provides a first practical manual for experts working in the energy sector or related sectors in developing countries and emerging economies.

DeveloPPP calls - Development Partnerships with the Private Sector

Through the GIZ programme, the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) provides companies investing in developing and emerging countries with financial and professional support as required. Since the launch of the programme in 1999, over 1,650 development partnerships have been realised successfully. was set up by the BMZ to foster the involvement of the private sector at the point where business opportunities and development policy initiatives intersect. By utilising the synergies between the objectives of the private sector and those of development cooperation, the programme provides a framework for the private sector and development cooperation to join forces to identify solutions to the global challenges.
Interested European companies including their subsidiaries in developing countries and emerging economies are invited to register their interest with GIZ and hand in their applications four times a year. The new round of the ideas competition will be open from May, 15th until June, 30th 2016.

These development partnerships with the private sector normally last between two and three years and cover a wide variety of areas such as environmental protection, agriculture, water supply and energy supply. The participating company is responsible for covering at least half of the overall costs and BMZ contributes up to a maximum of EUR 200,000.

Development partnerships that have the potential to achieve outstanding development benefits for wider economic sectors and/or targets a bigger population may receive special funding.
