welcome to the third edition of the Green Cooling Initiative's (GCI) newsletter! If you haven't read the previous editions, find out what you missed in our newsletter archive.

As always, we are happy to include any suitable articles in our newsletter - if you have any relevant contributions, please do not hesitate to contact us. The focus of this issue is the Green Cooling Week, that was organized by the GCI within the scope of the ATMOsphere Europe in Berlin in September. Policy makers and industry representatives from GCI partner countries were invited to attend the global event on promoting natural refrigerants, as well as a design thinking workshop and a field visit to a German manufacturer.

Moreover, we summarize the two side events presented by Proklima of the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) at the Open Ended Working Group (OEWG) to the Montreal Protocol in Bangkok in July. Finally, we would like to extend a warm welcome to one of our new GCI network members. This time we are presenting InvenSor, a Berlin-based manufacturer of climate-friendly adsorption chillers that was visited during the Green Cooling Week. Successful Green Cooling Week 2017 in Berlin

From September 25th to 29th about 40 participants from 17 different countries met at the Green Cooling Week 2017 in Berlin organised by the Green Cooling Initiative (GCI) in order to find out about the latest environmentally friendly cooling technologies and to jointly develop new ways of using, disseminating and promoting sustainable Green Cooling worldwide.

The basis for the week was the visit of the ATMOsphere Europe 2017, where participants had the opportunity to get exposure to current trends in mass-market solutions using natural refrigerants. At the same time, the accompanying, innovative Design Thinking Workshop explored new ways to promote alternative, sustainable cooling technologies in developing countries. Besides numerous opportunities for networking with selected green technology producers, a final field visit then provided insights into the current state-of-the-art green cooling technology.

The GCI is a global project funded by the International Climate Initiative (IKI) by the German Federal Ministry for Environment, Nature Conservation, Building and Nuclear Safety (BMUB) and implemented by GIZ Proklima. Since 2008, Proklima has been working successfully to disseminate ozone-and climate-friendly technologies.

GCI presents case study at ATMOsphere Europe in Berlin

In the course of the ATMOsphere Europe - a series of global events that bring together political, industrial as well as private stakeholders promoting natural refrigerants - the GCI presented a case study on the needs to develop international safety standards for hydrocarbon (HC) refrigerants in commercial refrigeration and air conditioning (RAC) appliances.

Whilst the interest in the use of HCs in commercial RAC appliances is growing, market and product development is obstructed by the charge size limits given in product safety standards. Charge size is either limited by room area, unit installation height or quantity of flammable refrigerant, often making it impossible to use sufficient refrigerant to cool a given room.

Measures such as the position and orientation of the leak source, appliance and room size as well as air flow characteristics can be adapted to address the threats posed by leaked refrigerants. Various stakeholders are making extensive investigations to understand the relationship between such measures and charge size limit and flammability. Revised safety standards have been submitted and will hopefully be approved by the European Committee for Electrotechnical Standardization (CENELEC).

Data update on Green Cooling Initiative Website: time series now until 2050

The GCI has updated its emissions data projections. Global predictions of individual countries' RAC emissions now include data until 2050, and reflect emerging trends in technology choices. Data can be accessed at here.

The updated RAC emissions data was developed using projections of energy efficiency which take into account recent studies on Seasonal Energy Efficiency ratios and the general trend to adopt Minimum Energy Performance standards. Moreover, the hydrofluorocarbon (HFC) phase-down schedule of the European Union under the Kigali Amendment was included in the Business-as-Usual scenario, showing the emission reduction resulting from the mandated transition to non-HFC technologies.

The RAC emissions estimates are based on stock and sales figures that are modelled using multiple predictors for these sectors, where such predictors were available (split residential air conditioners, car air conditioners and domestic refrigerators). The remaining sectors are modeled based on the ratios of refrigeration and air conditioning systems per inhabitants.

GHG-inventories in the RAC&F sectors – opportunities and challenges for accelerated climate action

During the 39th Meeting of the OEWG to the Montreal Protocol, policy makers from developing countries gathered to learn more about greenhouse gas (GHG) inventories in the RAC & foam sectors (RAC&F). The side event outlined the respective inventory methodology and the various co-benefits of such an inventory beyond determining the sector's GHG emissions.

In order to reduce HFC and CO2 emissions from the RAC&F sector and hereby complying with international climate goals, representatives from Ghana and Mauritius, two African frontrunners who have completed their inventories, shared their lessons learnt and benefits from the process. Ghana emphasized the usefulness and applicability of the results, e.g. using the data for the design of a RAC chapter in its nationally determined contributions (NDCs). Mauritius acknowledged the possibility to predict future scenarios or consumption trends. This will help in designing a roadmap for the phased replacement of HFC refrigerants and accelerating energy efficiency of appliances.

Kigali Amendment: How to assess climate benefits of energy efficiency?

The second GIZ side event during the OEWG in Bangkok focused on how to assess the climate benefits of energy efficiency. The side event with over 40 different stakeholders introduced different methodological approaches as well as practical examples from the perspective of RAC appliance manufacturers.

Acknowledging the importance of energy-related emissions on the overall climate impacts of RAC appliances, the Parties to the Montreal Protocol have requested the Executive Committee "to develop cost guidance associated with maintaining and/or enhancing the energy efficiency of low-GWP (global warming potential) or zero-GWP replacement technologies and equipment, when phasing down HFCs (...)"[1].

In light of this demand, the side event - organized by Proklima of the GIZ and funded by the Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) - gave an overview of methodological approaches as well as practical examples from the RAC manufacturers Carrier and Midea. Participants engaged in a lively discussion and agreed that assessing climate impacts of energy efficiency was an important but difficult task, as it demands the consideration of many parameters that vary significantly from case to case and country to country.

Workshop on the manual dismantling of refrigerators and air conditioners in Bogotá

30 experts in the field of waste of electrical and electronic equipment (WEEE) participated in a GIZ workshop on the manual dismantling of RAC appliances, which took place as part of the "1st International Congress for the Integral Management of Ozone Depleting Substances (ODS) and its Contribution to Climate Stability in Colombia".

The workshop was based on the Guideline for Manual Dismantling of Refrigerators and Air Conditioners, published by the GIZ and its Colombian partner in April this year. It aimed at improving the environmentally sound management of domestic RAC appliances in Colombia. RAC appliances contain refrigerants and blowing agents with high GWP and ozone depletion potential (ODP), making them an especially crucial group of WEEE.

The workshop was organized by the Proklima project "Management and destruction of ODS in ODS banks" in cooperation with the Technical Ozone Unit of the Ministry of Environment and Sustainable Development of Colombia. Funding was granted by the BMUB.

InvenSor: Waste heat for clean cooling

German manufacturer InvenSor boasts more than 10 years of industry-leading development of adsorption chillers. This was confirmed by the Federal Environment Ministry in 2009, which awarded the German cooling prize to the InvenSor LTC as a highly efficient chiller. A field visit to InvenSor was organized for the participants of the Green Cooling Week.
