A recent international study tour brought participants from Costa Rica, Grenada and the Philippines to Germany to explore the latest environmentally friendly cooling technologies at Chillventa – one of the world’s leading exhibitions for refrigeration technology.

The closing workshop for the "Green Cooling Initiative III” (GCI III) celebrated the project's achievements over the past three years and explored the future of the RAC sector in Vietnam. GCI III has collaborated with government bodies, experts, and partner organizations to drive down greenhouse gas emissions from cooling technologies. 

Africa's first climate and environmentally friendly air-conditioning chiller has been installed at the nearly Zero Emission Building in Accra, Ghana.  The chiller uses the natural refrigerant R290 and is mainly powered by a photovoltaic system, setting a new standard for sustainable construction.

Highlighting role models and success stories can inspire and guide women in the refrigeration and air conditioning (RAC) service sector. These strategies foster an inclusive culture that promotes growth and innovation while improving service delivery. The HPMP II program trained 17,000 RAC technicians across India, and an impact assessment revealed valuable insights about women in the sector.

In celebration of the 37th commemoration of World Ozone Protection Day, GIZ Proklima conducted learning sessions for Environment Regulatory and Enforcement Personnel in Manila and Davao City. These sessions featured hands-on demonstrations by technicians and insights into destruction technology, emphasizing the importance of Refrigerant Recovery,  Identification and End of Life Management. 

16 September, that's when the International Day for the Preservation of the Ozone Layer is being celebrated. This year's topic - Montreal Protocol: Advancing Climate Action. To mark the occasion, we celebrated the successes achieved so far in efforts to protect the ozone layer with various activities around the world.  Together with our partners, we took a look to the future and shared our perspectives within the framework of the Montreal Protocol. 

In implementing the projects Cool Contributions fighting Climate Change (C4) and C4II, the Philippines has unique expertise when it comes to safety standards in refrigeration, air conditioning and heat pumps (RACHP). A new report is now available that presents the Philippines' experience in adopting international RACHP safety standards as national standards. 

Since March 11, 2024, the application of the EU F-gas regulation has set very ambitious targets in all sectors regarding the phase-out of HFCs (hydrofluorocarbons). As a result, prices of conventional refrigerants have increased steadily up to 1000% (see Figure 1) and higher from their initial prices of between 3 – 5 EUR/kg in 2014. In contrast, the prices of alternative refrigerants have remained stable since their levels in 2020, according to German environmental consulting firm Öko-Recherche.
