Our impacts

For more than 30 years, GIZ Proklima has been at the forefront of ozone and climate protection, contributing significantly to advancing Green Cooling worldwide. Supported by the German government and other donors, the programme offers comprehensive policy advice, capacity building and technology transfer across more than 60 countries. And it’s worth it: our projects have achieved remarkable emission reductions while catalysing tangible improvements for people, such as access to cooling or enhanced income opportunities.

Proklima Impact on the International Agenda

We shed light on blind spots: our projects started working on topics long before they became commonly present in international discussions. With our innovative approaches, we achieved to bring them on the agenda of the Montreal Protocol and the Paris Agreement. Decision makers and implementing agencies of the Montreal Protocol's Multilateral Fund (MLF) have been building on our research and methodologies.

Examples:

  • End of life management of Ozone Depleting Substances (ODS) and Hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs): since 2013, the “ODS banks” project raised awareness on this important topic. and developed a methodology for collection and analysis of relevant data. Its work has been continued by the “Ozone and Climate Protection Alliance (COPA)”. In 2022, the MLF established a funding window on this topic.
  • Importance of technicians' training: while the first MLF projects focused on technology conversions, we started conducting trainings and developing teaching materials in the 1990s. Today, capacity development forms an integral part of the MLF.
  • Policy support: since the beginning, we have been advising our partner countries on the development and implementation of policies that accelerate the sector transformation. These activities are now also standard in all MLF projects.
  • We have been actively supporting countries to integrate cooling in their Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) under the Paris Agreement since 2016. We brought cooling strategies to life and were among the first to align national action with both the Kigali Amendment and the Paris Agreement. Guides like the Excel-based benchmarking tool help countries assess their refrigeration and air conditioning mitigation ambition and identify related NDC entry points.
