Video: Cold Chains at the Forefront – Challenges and Opportunities in Kenyan Capacity Building

07/2017 , Publication - Video :

Insufficient cold chains and air conditioning pose problems for industries. In many developing countries, there are not enough technicians to maintain and service the obsolete cooling equipment.

Strong capacity building and refrigeration technology training is needed in order to establish green cooling technologies countrywide.

Rising temperatures due to climate change, population growth and urbanization are leading to a higher demand for air conditioning and cooling. Like many other developing countries, Kenya lacks the basic infrastructure and resources needed to support smooth training in environmentally friendly maintenance and production of cooling appliances. Increasing skills on maintaining cold chain equipment and promoting development of off-grid renewable energy sources are core elements to achieve economic development, decrease child mortality and hunger eradication. Germany supports partner countries in introducing and disseminating environmentally friendly ways of cooling.

Cold Chains at the Forefront – Challenges and Opportunities is a series of clips produced by the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) and Proklima aiming at visualizing Kenya´s specific reality and circumstances under which perishable goods are treated with relation to different Sustainable Development Goals.
