On Tuesday, 20th September 2022, the 35th World Ozone Day was celebrated at the Place de la Nation in Ouagadougou, under the theme "Montreal Protocol: Global Cooperation to Protect Life on Earth". In Burkina Faso, this celebration was concurrent with the 10th edition of the Low Carbon Days with the theme: "Protection of the ozone layer and use of clean energy for clean air".

Mr. Jan Henrik Meise, the Chargé d'Affaires of the Embassy of the Federal Republic of Germany took part in the opening ceremony with Mrs. Désiré Nana, representative of the Resident Director of GIZ Burkina and Mrs. Pauline Yameogo, Coordinator of the ROCA Project.

In his speech, the Chargé d'Affaires of the Embassy of the Federal Republic of Germany highlighted the spirit of partnership between the European Union (EU), the main donor of the ROCA project of 6.360 million, the Federal Republic of Germany and the West and Central African states. The project’s aim is reducing ozone-depleting substances with high global warming potential.

At the end of the opening ceremony, marked by speeches by various personalities, he had a guided tour of the stands with Dr Maminata Traore, Minister of Environment, Energy, Water and Sanitation.

The project « Refroidissement respectueux de l'Ozone et du Climat en Afrique de l'Ouest et Centrale » (ozone and climate-friendly refrigeration in West and Central Africa, ROCA) promotes ozone- and climate-friendly cooling technologies in the four African countries Burkina Faso, Cameroon, Mali and Senegal. It started in April 2021 and will run until March 2024.

ROCA will contribute to an increasing use of Green Cooling technologies through improving the policy and regulatory framework on the one hand and building capacity for the use of such technologies on the other.

The project is co-funded by the European Union and the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ).

Cameroon celebrated World Ozone Day on the 23rd September 2022. A large number of partners from different areas attended the festivities: the National Ozone Unit, various departments of the Ministry of Environment, Nature Protection and Sustainable Development (MINEPDED), educational insitutions and others. The celebrations were chaired by the Secretary General of MINEPDED.

ROCA was able to carry out a knowledge assessment on the ozone layer, the Montreal Protocol and the ROCA project.
