Buenas prácticas Success story: Phase-out of HCFC-141b
Between July 2011 and 2014, Walton phased out the use of HCFC-141b in its manufacturing of insulation foam for domestic refrigerators, resulting in savings of 183.7 MT of HCFC-141b in Bangladesh. At the 62nd Meeting of the Executive Committee of the Montreal Protocol, the Multilateral Fund approved Walton’s project to convert its HCFC-141b foam production line to the environmentally-friendly cyclopentane technology. The projected was funded by the United Nations Development Program. …
Buenas prácticas Success story: Demonstrating climate benefits of a HCFC phase-out in Bangladesh
In November 2015, Walton launched a new line of refrigerators that run on the natural refrigerant isobutane. The project was supported by the United Nations Development Programme under Bangladesh’s national HCFC phase-out management plan (HPMP). The market transition to green cooling technologies will avoid 65 MT of HCFC-134a emissions annually, as well as savings of about 14 million kWH annually. The project was successfully completed by the end of 2016, and was implemented in a cost-effective and safe manner. …

Buenas prácticas Product: Transport refrigeration unit
In cooperation with Transfrig, the only South African manufacturer of transport refrigeration systems, GIZ South Africa has completed field testing of a R290 prototype refrigerated transport system in 2017. The R290 prototype has a global warming potential (GWP) of just 3, compared to 3922 of conventional R404 systems. The main aspects that were addressed during the design of the system were circuit optimization and integration of safety measures in order to achieve the same cooling capacities as R404 systems, whilst maximizing the coefficient of performance and reducing refrigerant charge. A leak identification feature was integrated into the system, whereby a suspected leak would result in a shut-down of the system. The product was developed under the project “Emission mitigation in the transport refrigeration sector through the introduction of innovative logistics and supply structures in South Africa”. It is funded by the German Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation, Building and Nuclear Safety (BMUB), with the South African Department of Trade and Industry as the leas executing agency. …
Buenas prácticas Policymaking: The Natural Voice- A global call to reduce greenhouse gases by natural refrigerants
Introduced by Shecco in 2009, the Natural Voice is a global statement open to industry, associations, non-profit organizations and individuals supporting the potential of natural refrigerants in replacing potent greenhouse gases. At present, the Natural Voice has 109 signatories from a range of sectors and industries. The statement will be presented to national governments and international climate negotiators in the near future to build the basis for developing natural refrigerant initiatives around the world. The Natural Voice demands national governments to remove (inter)national trade barriers and to revise safety standards, codes and legislation that restrict the use of natural refrigerants without merit. Furthermore, it calls upon national governments to provide (non-) financial support for the research and promotion of natural refrigerants, and to facilitate the technology transfer from developed to developing countries. …
Buenas prácticas Project: Room air-conditioner conversion project
Between 2008 and 2013, GIZ Proklima, on behalf of the German Environmental Ministry, supported the Indian company Godrej & Boyce to introduce hydrocarbon-driven (R290) split and room air conditioners to the Indian Market. Godrej & Boyce have installed a production line for R290 ACs while considering the necessary safety procedures to counter the risks arising from flammable hydrocarbon-based technology. Product certification and technician training are also a focus of the project. The new ACs have been designed according to European safety standards and have the highest energy efficiency in their class, hereby saving electricity costs and reducing indirect emissions. Each production line produces around 180,000 HCFC-free, energy efficient units annually. The direct and indirect emissions saved by these units, compared to earlier models using F-gases, amount to around 1 million tonnes of CO2 equivalent. …
Buenas prácticas Success story: The Fridge Factory conversion project
With the support of GIZ Proklima, in 2008 the Fridge Factory was the first refrigeration manufacturer in the sub-Saharan region to convert its production line to natural refrigerant-based technologies. During the 3-year project, the Fridge Factory converted its entire domestic and commercial production line to operate with hydrocarbon refrigerants, with an annual production of approx. 60,000 appliances. Every sold unit replaces the use of fluorinated refrigerants, hereby avoiding an equivalent of 250 kg of CO2 of direct emissions during the lifetime of a unit. Moreover, the new appliances save more than 20% energy consumption compared to conventional units, hereby reducing electricity costs. The conversion to modern technologies strengthens the Fridge Factory’s market position against environmentally-damaging imports. Moreover, qualifying the engineering and technical staff to work with the new technology helps secure and maintain around 500 jobs. …
