In cooperation with the Hawaii Natural Energy Institute, Sustainable Design & Consulting LLC (SDC) implemented a project to test space conditioning systems termed “comfort islands”. Comfort island provide locally limited comfort conditions for occupants, hereby avoiding the conditioning of an entire space. Localized spaces with comfort islands are not dehumidified, and therefore a large amount of cooling for latent heat removal can be spared. Ideally installed comfort islands can provide energy savings of up to 70% compared with conventional space heating. …

Between July 2011 and 2014, Walton phased out the use of HCFC-141b in its manufacturing of insulation foam for domestic refrigerators, resulting in savings of 183.7 MT of HCFC-141b in Bangladesh. At the 62nd Meeting of the Executive Committee of the Montreal Protocol, the Multilateral Fund approved Walton’s project to convert its HCFC-141b foam production line to the environmentally-friendly cyclopentane technology. In November 2015, Walton launched a new line of refrigerators that run on the natural refrigerant isobutane. The project was supported by the United Nations Development Programme under Bangladesh’s national HCFC phase-out management plan (HPMP). The market transition to green cooling technologies will avoid 65 MT of HCFC-134a emissions annually, as well as savings of about 14 million kWH annually. The project was successfully completed by the end of 2016, and was implemented in a cost-effective and safe manner. …
