05.06.2024 News Botswana and Namibia get ready for the International Carbon Markets

As part of the Cooling program for southern Africa (CooPSA) trainings and workshops were organised to prepare Botswana and Namibia to join the international carbon market. The organisation took place in cooperation with representatives of the different ministries and departments of the two governments.

As countries strive towards mitigating climate change, more than half of the countries that developed an updated Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC) have recognised the relevance of the refrigeration and air conditioning (RAC) sector and included hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs) in the scope of gases covered. However, most NDCs lack concrete actions and implementation strategies for the RAC sector.

28.05.2024 News Making Use of Natural Refrigerants to Phase Down of Climate-Damaging Refrigerants (HFCS) in Vietnam

In September 2019, Vietnam ratified the Kigali Amendment to the Montreal Protocol, committing to phasing down HFCs by 80% by 2045, starting in 2024. To support Vietnam in this transition of promoting the use of natural refrigerants and energy efficiency, the Green Cooling Initiative (GCI) III project has implemented different interventions centered around three main areas: policy advise, technology transfer and capacity building. GCI III is funded by the German Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation, Nuclear Safety and Consumer Protection (BMUV) under the International Climate Initiative (IKI).

A more efficient use of energy would lead to less CO2 emissions and thereby reduce global warming. Minimum Energy Performance Standards (MEPS) and energy efficiency labels are a low cost strategy to follow this aim and to increase the number of energy efficient tools on the market. The ROCA project is working on this in its partner countires. This publication presents some results and recommendations for Burkina Faso.

25.06.2024 News Brazil will start the implementation of Stage 3 of the HPMP

The third Stage of the Brazilian Hydrochlorofluorocarbons Phase-out Management Plan (HPMP) was approved during the 94th Meeting of the Executive Committee of the Multilateral Fund for the Implementation of the Montreal Protocol, which took place between May 27th and May 30th. The country will count with US$ 36,5 million to implement the third and last phase of the program that aims to achieve the elimination of 100% of HCFC consumption by 2030.
