The Green Cooling Initiative (GCI) has donated a total of nine propane (R290)-based split air-conditioning units to Uganda’s Kyambogo University and the Uganda National Association of Refrigeration and Air Conditioning (UNARA).

04.10.2023 News GIZ Sustainability award winner 2023: Towards the 1st CO2 neutral GIZ Country office in Uganda
The GIZ Uganda Country Office has taken a significant step towards environmental sustainability by replacing old air conditioners (ACs) with eco-friendly “Blue Angel” ecolabel certified and highly efficient technology. 17 efficient ACs, with an A+++ energy efficiency rating, that use natural refrigerant (R290) have been successfully installed. They replaced old inefficient fixed speed AC units that utilised the synthetic refrigerants R22 or R410A, which are ozone depleting, climate harmful and pollutive refrigerants including per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) and Trifluoroacetic Acid impact.

Several treaties on the control and elimination of substances that contribute to global warming have been signed worldwide. These include the Vienna Convention for the protection of the ozone layer, the Montreal Protocol on substances that deplete the Ozone layer, the Kyoto Protocol, and most recently, the Kigali Amendment to the Montreal Protocol.
