01.12.2017 News Side event at COP23: How sustainable cooling can contribute to the Sustainable Development Goals
At the COP23 in Bonn in October, GIZ Proklima of the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) successfully held a side event on the potential of sustainable cooling in supporting the International Climate Agenda. Over 40 participants attended the event, during which the significance of the Kigali Amendment for the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and the Paris Agreement was discussed.

During the 39th Meeting of the OEWG to the Montreal Protocol, policy makers from developing countries gathered to learn more about greenhouse gas (GHG) inventories in the RAC & foam sectors (RAC&F). The side event outlined the respective inventory methodology and the various co-benefits of such an inventory beyond determining the sector's GHG emissions.

The GCI has updated its emissions data projections. Global predictions of individual countries' RAC emissions now include data until 2050, and reflect emerging trends in technology choices. Data can be accessed at here.

From September 25th to 29th about 40 participants from 17 different countries met at the Green Cooling Week 2017 in Berlin organised by the Green Cooling Initiative (GCI) in order to find out about the latest environmentally friendly cooling technologies and to jointly develop new ways of using, disseminating and promoting sustainable Green Cooling worldwide.

The United Nations Sustainable Energy for All initiative has identified energy-efficient appliances as a "high-impact opportunity". They have the potential to reduce countries' greenhouse gas emissions, generate economic benefits, enhance energy security and improve people's wellbeing. Amongst a five-part series of United for Efficiency (U4E) reports, the Green Cooling Initiative (GCI) contributed to two guidelines on energy-efficient & climate-friendly refrigerators and air conditioners.

On May 23rd, the first African test chamber for refrigerated vehicles was officially inaugurated in Pretoria. The test chamber enables manufacturers to test their cooling units and increase their efficiency, hereby mitigating the high levels of emissions from the transport refrigeration sector.
